Set to 'accomplish something'

Ten-year-old Paige Alms sets high goals for herself: She plans to turn pro in not one, but two sports.

After college, Alms aspires to be a professional soccer player and "the best surfer girl in the world," she said.

"I want to be both," said Alms, a fifth-grade student at Haiku School on Maui. "I just enjoy sports, and accomplishing something would really make me happy." Alms started learning how to surf eight months ago and already dreams of running her own surf company.

Alm's homeroom and language arts teacher, Rhonda Fonseca, said she would also make a good lawyer, because she knows how to argue her point in the classroom. Alms, who is the school's student council president, impresses Fonseca with her quick wit and ability to speak her mind.

"It's like talking to an adult," Fonseca said. "She's not an argumentative student, but she knows how to say what she wants to say and convince you that her point is valid. She's a challenge for me."

Earlier in the school year, students were assigned to do a biography project. Alms, Fonseca said, did an excellent project on Babe Ruth. Not surprisingly, she got an A-plus for the assignment.

An honor roll student, Alms has a 3.7 grade-point average. Last year, she was runner-up in the school's geography bee contest.

"Whatever she does, she does really well," Fonseca said.
