Jannie Thom, 95, diesJannie Luke Thom, a retired public schoolteacher and former leader in the Chinese community, died Sunday in St. Francis Hospice. She was 95.
She was the first Asian woman to teach in the Hamakua district of the Big Island.
Thom taught English and U.S. history and was one of the state public school system's language specialists in the 1920s.
She taught at Central and Stevenson intermediate schools and Kaimuki High School.
The United Chinese Society named Thom its Model Chinese Mother in 1974 in recognition of her activities.
She was a former president of the Hawaii Chinese Civic Association and a founding member of the Associated Chinese University Women and the Chinese Women's Club.
She was also a volunteer in numerous community organizations including the United Fund and the American Red Cross.
Thom was a graduate of Punahou School and the University of Hawaii.
She is survived by her husband Wah Chan; son Roland Q.F.; daughters Lois Mui and Adele Chang; sisters Doris Wong and Kwai Ngan Tom; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Borthwick Mortuary. Friends may call after noon. Burial will be in Manoa Chinese Cemetery.
The family asks that flowers be omitted and aloha attire be worn.

Brenda M.K. Miki Ramirez, 28, of Waikoloa, Hawaii, a disc jockey at the Hilton Waikoloa, will be remembered in a service Saturday. Ramirez was killed Nov. 28 when her pickup truck went off Waikoloa Road and overturned.
