A global frame of mind

This past summer, Shaaroni Wong traveled to China for the first time.

Wong, a junior at La Pietra-Hawaii School For Girls, was selected as one of five Luke Scholars in the "Focus on China" cultural immersion session. Sponsored by the Wo International Center at Punahou School, the program is for students interested in pursuing international studies.

Wong, who has a 3.0 grade-point average, is an extremely service-oriented individual, said Sandy Robinson, student dean and director of admissions at La Pietra. Wong earned a Girl Scout's silver award for a Kahoolawe clean-up project two years ago and was president of the school's photography club last year.

For the past three summers, she was a volunteer at the Hawaii Center for the Deaf and Blind, helping hearing-impaired children. She's also the playwright of "And Wings to Fly With," a story about a hearing-impaired girl who must choose between trying to fit in with the popular crowd or her hearing-impaired friends.

Wong said after she graduates, she plans to go to college on the East Coast and become a special-education teacher.

"Shaaroni has a global frame of mind," Robinson said. "When she makes a commitment to her academics or an activity, she's generous with her time and sees things through. And to me, that's really what makes her so exceptional."
