


Andrew Lewis, a sophomore at the Assets School of Hawaii, won the Interscholastic Sailing Association National High School Single-Handed Sailing Championship last weekend on Galveston Bay in Texas -- and he won it in a breeze. Assets School

handed sailing champLewis, sailing a Laser in winds that gusted to 30 knots on the second day of racing Sunday, won six of 11 races -- including the last two -- to dominate the fleet of 30 sailors selected nationwide in district elimination events. He had a low total of 34 points, 26 better than runner-up Brian Lake of San Diego High.
"It was a first for any Hawaiian school, " said Larry White of the National Interscholastic Sailing Association.
The path to the nationals began for Lewis with a victory in the Maui Divers Interscholastic Challenge Cup last spring.
He now has qualified for the U.S. Sailing Single-Handed Championships next summer. The winner of that event automatically will be one of the 50 sailors at the U.S. Olympic Single-Handed Trials.
GOLF GRAND SLAM TICKETS: Tickets are still available for the Nov. 16-18 PGA Grand Slam of Golf at the Poipu Bay Resort course on Kauai.
Competing for a million-dollar purse will be Masters and British Open champion Mark O'Meara, U.S. Open champion Lee Janzen, PGA champ Vijay Singh and Tiger Woods.
Woods plays Janzen and O'Meara faces Singh in Tuesday matches. The losers square off for third place and the winners play for the title on Wednesday.
Season tickets for Monday's Pro-Am, Tuesday and Wednesday cost $40. Separate Tuesday or Wednesday tickets cost $20 and Monday Pro-Am tickets are $10. Youngsters 18 and under will be admitted free if accompanied by a ticket-bearing adult.
The gallery will be limited to 6,000 spectators daily.

WAHINE FINISH DOWN THE LINE: Hawaii's women's golf team finished 16th and Oklahoma State took the title in the Princeville Wahine Invitational yesterday on Kauai.
Nationally 14th-ranked Oklahoma State had a 54-hole team total of 875, nine strokes better than second-place Oregon. UCLA was third at 893. Hawaii had a 938 total.
Individual honors went to Nevada's Angie Yoon with a 4-under-par total of 212 after shooting a final-round 71. Oregon State's Kathleen Takaishi also shot 71 and finished one shot behind Yoon.
Kathy Cho was the top UH finisher, tying for 32nd place with a 229 total. She shot an 80 yesterday.
Other Wahine scorers were Melissa Shintani (79--233), Linda Appelblad (76--237), Desiree Ting (81--241) and Angie Park (86--248).
KEY SWIM MEETS FOR UH: The Hawaii men's and women's swimming teams will take part in their first dual meets of the season in the Big West Shoot Out at Irvine, Calif., this weekend.
The UH women will swim in six dual meets, the UH men in eight.
Other schools entered are host UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara, New Mexico State, North Texas, Cal State Bakersfield, Cal State Northridge, Pacific and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
