Dillingham tennis titlesWalter, playing in his first Hawaii tournament, also teamed with Joel Finnegan for a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Andrew Csordas and Chris Leong in the men's doubles final.
The women's singles crown went to defending champ Ei Oyama, with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Erin Hoe. Oyama and Ann Pellow took the doubles title by beating Stacy Hakikawa and Loni Matsunaga, 6-4, 6-3.
SILVA, WANG PAC WEST STARS: Brigham Young-Hawaii's Arlete Silva and Hawaii's Pacific's Hai Yan Wang, who led their volleyball teams to 4-0 records in the Pacific West Conference's first crossover tournament last weekend at Ellensburg, Wash., have been named conference co-players of the week.
Silva, a junior from Brazil, had 48 kills, a .488 hitting percentage, 38 digs and 15 blocks in the tournament. Wang, a junior from China, had 58 kills, a .374 percentage, 22 digs and 14 blocks.
WAHINE GOLFERS TRAIL: The Hawaii women's golf team was 11th in a 13-team field going into today's final round of the 54-hole Northwest Classic at Corvallis, Ore.
The UH women had a 325 total yesterday for a 36-hole score of 653, 56 strokes behind first-place Oregon State, the host team.
Kelli Kamamura of Washington shot a par-72 yesterday for a 141 total and two-stroke lead in the individual standings.
Angie Park had a 77 for the Wahine and was tied for 41st place with a 160 total. Linda Appelblad (81--161) shared 43rd place.
UH SAILORS FOURTH: The Hawaii coed sailing team finished fourth at the Stoney Burke Intersectional regatta Sunday at the Berkeley, Calif., Marina.
USC placed first among the 12 Pacific Coast Intercollegiate Yacht Racing Association teams. Stanford was second and UC Santa Barbara third.
UH skippers were Brent Harrill and Jeff Nelson, and crew members were Leilani Patacchia and Sarah Hall.
BYUH BOOTERS EDGE LINFIELD: Brigham Young-Hawaii shaded Linfield, 1-0, in a men's soccer match yesterday at McMinnville, Ore., with Jeremy Yorgason scoring the game's only goal.
Goalkeeper Jeff Miller registered his third shutout of the season as the Seasiders improved to 5-1. Linfield is 6-8.
KIM WINS TAEKWONDO BOUT: Daniel Kim of Hawaii won the 120-pound title by beating three-time national champion Hyon Lee in a Professional Taekwondo League match in Aspen, Colo, last Tuesday.
The tournament will be televised on ESPN2 on Oct. 25.
