Rally opposing same sex
draws GOP, Dems

There were more Republican than Democratic candidates at a weekend rally urging a "yes" vote on the ballot measure that could prohibit same-sex marriage in Hawaii.

Democratic Gov. Ben Cayetano could not attend, but he did send an aide who reaffirmed that Cayetano will be voting yes on the proposed constitutional amendment to give the Legislature the authority to limit marriage to opposite-sex couples.

The Republicans at the rally, which drew about 500 people to Kapiolani Park, included congressional nominee Gene Ward, lieutenant governor hopeful Stan Koki, state Reps. Sam Aiona, Barbara Marumoto and Colleen Meyer, state Senate nominee Cindy Rasmussen and state House candidates Louis Molina and Bill Sharp.

Democrats present included state Rep. Lei Ahu Isa and Honolulu Councilman Andy Mirikitani. Another Democrat, state Rep. Ron Menor, could not attend, but one of his campaign assistants was present to hand out campaign literature.

LIU'S FUTURE UNDECIDED When former state Senate Minority Leader Michael Liu was asked if his defeat for the Republican nomination for lieutenant governor marked the end of his political career, he did not sing a swan song. Instead, he did a tap dance.

He doesn't know if he will run again, said Liu, who has lost two elections in the last two years, including his state Senate seat in 1996. It depends if voters believe he has something to offer and if he can win, Liu said.

Liu declined to comment on whether he would take a Cabinet position if GOP gubernatorial nominee Linda Lingle were to oust Democratic Gov. Ben Cayetano. Before the primary, Lingle said she was open to having the loser in the lieutenant governor's race in her Cabinet -- if she should win.
