Court rules nine-vote primary loss stands

The state Supreme Court ruled Alex Sonson, who lost the primary election by nine votes to incumbent Rep. Roy Takumi (D, Pearl City-Waipahu), is not entitled to a recount or a new election under state law.

The court affirmed Takumi's victory in the Sept. 19 primary.

The Sonson ruling is the last of four petitions filed after the primary election by candidates who alleged that voter confusion over a new ballot system cost them a chance to advance to the general election.

Last week, Sonson filed an additional petition with seven affidavits from voters who said they voted for him but confusion over the new system caused their ballots to be disqualified.

The court, however, noted that Hawaii law is clear that candidates must show there are enough voters to change the outcome of the election and the evidence must be provided within six days of the primary election.

Kailua sewage plant work to reduce odors

Maintenance work will be conducted today and tomorrow at Kailua Regional Wastewater Treatment Plant.

The city planned to temporarily shut down the primary odor control system from about 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days.

But if there are no tradewinds, work will be postponed, the city said.

The maintenance work is necessary to improve the system and reduce objectionable smells coming from the plant, the city said.
