Noxious fumes sicken three at Pearlridge

At least three people were treated following the release of a noxious fume, believed to be pepper spray or a like substance, in the first phase of Pearlridge Center yesterday afternoon.

Firefighters were called to the scene -- near the food court -- at around 3:20 p.m. but could find no evidence of the substance. Fire Capt. Rod Nakashima said mall-goers affected by the gas had left the scene by the time firefighters arrived.

Two women and a man were treated for ill affects of inhaling a noxious gas and released from Kapiolani Medical Center at Pali Momi, according to hospital spokeswoman Pat Oda.

In March 1996, more than a dozen people were treated at area hospitals after pepper spray was shot into the air at the Fun Factory in Pearlridge's second phase.

UH-W.Oahu's future is subject of town meeting

The future of the University of Hawaii-West Oahu will be discussed at a daylong town meeting on Thursday at Leeward Community College's theater.

State and other officials will discuss the Leeward and Central Oahu population base from which the campus draws its students and about what to expect in the years ahead as the surrounding neighborhoods expand.

Planners will also discuss the long-range future for the permanent campus on the hillside overlooking Kapolei.

Keynote speakers will be Gov. Ben Cayetano, UH President Kenneth P. Mortimer and Antioch University Chancellor James Hall.

Hall will discuss academic planning in a new campus environment. He is the founding president of Empire State College in New York, which has been recognized nationally for its innovation in educational delivery.

Additional space at the 9 a.m. meeting is still available. Call 454-4750 to register. The event is free.

LCC to host meeting on nuclear carriers

The Navy will discuss a proposal to berth two additional nuclear aircraft carriers in San Diego and one additional in the Pacific Northwest at a public hearing Sept. 24.

The hearing will begin at 7 p.m. at Leeward Community College's theater.

Time has been set aside for public comment.

The Navy is now collecting comment on a draft environmental impact statement on the home-porting of three nuclear carriers. The deadline for comment is Oct. 12.

Current plans recommend two additional carriers at North Island Naval Air Station in San Diego for a total of three.

Two other nuclear carriers would be berthed at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and Everett Naval Air Station in Washington.

The Navy ruled out the possibility of berthing a carrier at Pearl Harbor.
