VP Nabor-ly
over Kobe steak

Mug shot WANT to know where Vice President Al Gore and wife Tipper stayed during the Oahu portion of their vacation? Well, "Golllllee." They bunked at neighborly Jim Nabors' home, and Tuesday night had a dinner from Kobe Steak House catered there. No knife-wielding chefs were on hand, however. Kobe owner Rod Gardiner and wife Marilyn had all the goodies pre-sliced at the restaurant before delivering it to the Nabors home and going through the ritual of being checked out by the Secret Service. The Gores then feasted on goodies like Kobe steak, shrimp, scallops, lobster and teri chicken and graciously posed for photos with the Gardiners. No doubt their pictures will soon be on the wall at Kobe Steak House ... Rev. Jesse Jackson, also here for the political rally, dined in relative seclusion in Michel's at the Colony Surf that night ...

DEMOCRATS seemed determined to have a big crowd to hear Tuesday's address by Vice President Gore, whose laid back style was the antithesis of the overly dramatic arm-waving and screaming of Reps. Neil Abercrombie and (especially) Patsy Mink. Free tickets were passed out, well, freely, despite the announced $25 price tag to hear the address. Aston Hotels head Andre Tatibouet and wife Jane received separate invites, along with a joint one, each containing two tickets to the "fund-raiser" -- six tickets in all. Each invite was addressed to "Dear Fellow Democrat," despite the fact that Jane Tatibouet was head of the State Republican Party (and is still on the executive committee) and a former GOP state representative, while Andre is a longtime Republican leader and past State Young Republican Chair ...

Mooning right along

ALL previous lunar experiences may be eclipsed over the Labor Day Weekend at the Hilton Hawaiian Village. They're holding the inaugural "Full Moon Festival" Sept. 4-7. You can enjoy such goodies as a special Moon Harvest menu at the Golden Dragon, the Bali-by-the-Sea's "Moonlight Serenade" offerings, a moonlight cruise on the Atlantis Discovery shuttle boat with astronaut Buzz Aldrin who'll talk about his first hand experiences on the lunar surface and if you just want to swig some moonshine, you can sit in the Tapa Bar and hear the Peter Moon Band. (You expected Kapena?) All that's missing is moonwalking by Michael Jackson and a rubdown by massage therapist Daphne Moon of TV's "Frasier" ...

ACCORDING to Al Hoffman of Communications Pacific, the firm doing the spots for Linda Lingle for governor, the men doing the voice-overs for both his client and her opponent, Frank Fasi, sound alike, but are in fact different people. Les Gargan does the Lingle voice-overs and Dunbar Wakayama is the voice on the Fasi spots ... Things must be looking up at Communications Pacific -- the firm is moving into Penthouse Two of the Amfac Center next week ...

Stand by your mandate

DESPITE all their problems, Liberty House is living up to its goal of serving local folks. When a customer recently asked saleswoman Cynthia Tesoro if she'd accept a $50 gift certificate, she replied, "No problem." Tesoro might not have been so quick to answer if she'd looked at the certificate -- it was issued March 1, 1968, with a one-year expiration date. But true to her word, and backed up by operations manager Rick Mitchell, Liberty House accepted the 30-year-old certificate which the woman found while cleaning out a drawer at home ...
