Limping, she came round Missouri's last waltz
the point
Engines cold, guns silent
Never again to roar
In the defense of freedom
Never again to fire in anger
To cover marines charging
ashore.
Never again will she sail
stormy seas
But lie quiet in peaceful port
Come to rest near her sister
Struck down long ago on a
Sunday morn.Limping, she came round the
Richard Halloran
point
Under misty skies, through
seas of gray --
Battleship gray, a fitting
tribute
To a proud warrior, great ship
of the line
History written on her decks
The sum of blood and sweat
below.
An outpouring of ink and
words greet her
But none is better said
Than the sailor's ancient
salute:
Well done.

Missouri will draw more visitors to Hawaii
I agree with Jeff Konn (Letters, June 19). Thanks to all involved with bringing the USS Missouri back to Pearl Harbor. I have been to the USS Arizona Memorial and, with the USS Missouri now on Battleship Row, I am now looking forward to my next visit.Stephen Maynard-Smith

Missouri Special No one has proved Marcoses were crooks
The June 19 cartoon by Corky -- of Mrs. Marcos, President-elect Estrada and a couple of his aides -- was well illustrated. But the appropriate caption in reaction to the rumbling sound in the cartoon should have been, "No sir, it's just all those heroes rolling over in their graves trying to stand at attention and render salutes to the most decorated hero of the Philippines, Major Ferdinand E. Marcos."Your paper endlessly prints that the Marcoses amassed wealth illegally. No one has proved they are thieves. The Marcoses are innocent until proven guilty. That's the American way.
Two U.S. judges tried the Marcoses without them present and found them guilty of human abuses. Those judges, who awarded billions of dollars to the alleged victims, are ignorant.
The Philippines is not a part of Hawaii or the United States. Therefore, the judges did not have the right or jurisdiction to try the ruling family of a sovereign nation such as the Republic of the Philippines.

Akaka stood up for Asian Americans
A significant response was made by Sen. Daniel K. Akaka to the Majority Report from the U.S. Senate Committee on Governmental Affairs, Special Investigation into the 1996 Elections and Campaign Contributions. The response came at the close of the investigation into campaign contributions. Senator Akaka repeated his message that -- while he did not condone any acts that were illegal and that people found to have violated campaign contribution laws should be held accountable to the full extent of the law -- it was unacceptable to place Asian and Pacific Americans under the same suspicion as the foreign nationals of Asian and Pacific origin.
The senator made similar comments at the outset of the hearings and, as a result, his office received many negative calls, including death threats. We regard his subsequent response to be courageous and noble.

Don't let Aikahi sewage plant stink up Kailua
The odor of the Aikahi Sewage Treatment Plant is worse than the smell of 10,000 unflushed toilets. It is unconscionable that this situation has persisted in spite of years of community input and public meetings with the city. The smell is worse than ever. Why can't the city remedy this situation? And now it wants to build additional sites at the entrance to Kailua and at the end of Iana Street in Enchanted Lake. So now all of Kailua will be blanketed by "eu de toilet"?
Fix the problem now and put the new facilities by the old dump. We don't want it in our neighborhood air or in our bays and beaches.

No matter what office he runs for -- toss Tom out
Is it really true that Rep. Terrance Tom will run for state Senate this year? Either way, I say: Thwart Testy Terrance Tom's Terrible Temper Tantrums. Toss Tom!Loren Ekroth

(Via the Internet)Bishop Estate report is posted on the web
Your readers should be reminded to visit your web site to read the Final Report of Bishop Estate Fact-Finder Patrick K.S.L. Yim, posted on Friday, Dec. 19, 1997.Read again about the abuses of just one individual, who could be mistaken for a 19th century robber baron and whose behavior surely justifies protection against a capitalist taskmaster.

Bronster is beginning to emulate Ken Starr
I am not a Bishop Estate sympathizer, but it seems to me that Attorney General Margery Bronster is turning into a miniature Kenneth Starr.Does House Speaker Joe Souki have a conflict of interest? Sure. But what does it have to do with the state AG? Absolutely nothing.
A little focus and judgment, please, Ms. Bronster.
