Umemura match
play medalist

Anna Umemura took medalist honors with a 1-under-par 72 in yesterday's qualifying round of the Hawaii State Women's Golf Association Match Play Championship at Oahu Country Club.

Umemura, runner-up Christel Tomori (76), third-place Marie Miyashiro (80) and No. 4 Mahina Ah Yuen (81) earned byes in the opening round of match play.

First-round winners yesterday were Marcie Rudich, Kari Williams, Mal-Ja Kwon and Kathy Cho.

50TH MOANALUA WOMEN'S TOURNEY: The 50th Moanalua Women's Invitational golf tournament runs Thursday and Friday at the Moanalua Golf Course.

Entry fee is $98, which includes a continental breakfast and a luau awards luncheon at the course.

The tournament is dedicated this year to the memory of Billie Beamer, who died in January. Beamer was a club member and a four-time winner of the tournament. She set the low-gross record for the tournament at 154, a mark that still stands.

MIURA BOWLS 300: Kevin Miura bowled a perfect 300 game during Waialae Strike & Spare Club league play on May 30 at Waialae Bowl.

Miura, 19, also had games of 225 and 199 for a 724 series.

MELLO NEW DAMIEN COACH: Byron Mello will take over as head coach of the Damien Memorial High School varsity boys' basketball program, according to school athletic director Herb Lloyd.

Mello, who succeeds Mel Cortez, led the St. Louis junior varsity to second place and an 11-2 record in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu this year. He was also an assistant coach for the Sacred Hearts Academy girls' team last season.

He was a varsity Division I assistant from 1992-97 at Punahou, where he also coached the intermediate team to three league titles between 1984-90.

Mello has a Masters Degree in arts and education from Pepperdine.

VILORIA, RODRIGUEZ WIN TWICE: Hawaii boxing champions Brian Viloria and Antonio Rodriguez each won Friday and Saturday bouts at Colorado Springs, Colo., while tuning up for next month's Goodwill Games at New York.

Viloria, fighting at 106 pounds, outpointed Ron Siler of Cincinnati and Jose Navarro of Los Angeles. Rodriguez stopped Cornelius Lock of Detroit and decisioned Jose Santa Cruz of Monterey Park, Calif.

They will continue training at Colorado Springs for the July 19-Aug. 2 Goodwill Games.

SYNCHRO-SWIM MEET AT HILO: About 300 Americans and others from around the world will compete in the 1998 U.S. Open Synchronized Swimming Championships July 12-18 at Hilo's Kawamoto Swim Stadium.

The athletes will compete for titles in solo, duet, trio and team events in the United Airlines- sponsored tournament.

Junior competition runs from Sunday, July 12, through Tuesday, July 14. Senior competition runs July 16-18.

MONSTER TRUCKIN': The second annual Hawaiian Monster Smash and Mud Bog will take place Thursday, Friday and Saturday at Hawaii Motorsports Park in Kapolei.

Starting times are 4:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday and noon Saturday.

Tickets are available at Napa Auto Parts stores and Island Mini Marts.

Monster trucks will be on display tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the following locations.

KEAULANA, BATOR TOP ANGLERS: Buffalo Keaulana, aboard Akoni, caught the largest ahi of the day, a 196-pounder, to capture the $5,000 prize in the Ahi Fever fishing tournament Sunday off Waianae.

Bobby Bator, aboard Nani Jean, reeled in a 588-pound marlin to top that category and win $2,500. He also took the grand bonus prize -- a $25,000 Glasspro with twin Hondas -- for most total weight.
