"Silverman" Johnny Gibney makes up to $200 a night on the
streets of Waikiki. Passers-by drop money into a cup in appreciation
for his mechanical man act. A painter/decorator/laborer from
Liverpool, England, Gibney has been working Waikiki in silver
clothes and make-up for about a year.

You could pay $25-plus-drinks at a Waikiki showroom,
or you could take in the street-level entertainment outside for
next to nothing. These nights, everything from the performance
art of the "Silvermen" to Beethoven played on steel drums, to
gospel Samoan-style is packed into a 100-yard strip between
the International Market Place and the Princess Kaiulani Hotel.
Musicians such as Frank Orrall, now of Poi Dog Pondering,
and Abra Moore got started on the streets of Waikiki,
and the tradition continues.
