BYUH to host holiday
basketball tournament

Seven NCAA Division I men's basketball teams will join Brigham Young-Hawaii Dec. 21-23 in the first Pearl Harbor Classic at Cannon Activities Center.

Michigan State, which won the Big Ten Conference's regular season last year, is the top team. Also commtted to play are Alabama, Tulsa, Texas Tech, Weber State, Pepperdine and Oregon State.

NELSON LEADS ASSISTANT PROS: Kirk Nelson, playing on his home links, Maui's Makena Golf Club South Course, shot a 4-under-par 68 yesterday for the halfway lead in the Zevo Aloha Section PGA Assistant Professional Championship.

Ala Wai Golf Club's Henry Sieradski was two strokes behind Nelson after the first of two 18-hole rounds. Tied for third at par 72 were Ko Olina's Johnny Rieger and Kapalua's Brett Eaton.

The tournament winner qualifies for the national Assistant Pro ChampionshipNov. 10-13 in Port Lucie, Fla.

NETTLES, RESSING 10K VICTORS: Gary Nettles was the Men's Open winner with a time of 33 minutes, 39 seconds and Mareike Ressing took Women's Open honors with a 38:33 clocking in the Windward Mall 10K run yestereday in Kaneohe.

SCHOLASTIC SURF MEETS: The National Scholastic Surfing Association will hold its second annual Hawaii Conference Regional Championships May 29-31 and June 7 at White Plains Beach at Barbers Point.

Some 175 surfers, including 60 from the neighbor islands, will compete in the final qualifying event for the national championships in San Clemente, Calif., June 23-28.
