Hawaii’s sumo stars
in the hunt

TOKYO -- Yokozuna (grand champion) Takanohana extended his unbeaten streak to five along with lower-ranked Takatoriki and Mongolian Kyokushuzan today in the 15-day Summer Grand Sumo tournament.

One victory behind the three are seven wrestlers, including three ozekis (champions) -- Wakanohana, Takanonami and Musashimaru, or Fiamalu Penitani from Hawaii.

Yokozuna Akebono, or Chad Rowan from Hawaii, scored his third victory against two defeats.

Takanohana fended off Aogiyama's hand thrusts and sent him out from behind.

Wakanohana, seeking promotion to sumo's highest rank, toppled Tochinonada with a leg trick.

Musashimaru thrust out Tosanoumi and Takanonami forced out Kotonowaka.

In the day's final bout, Akebono and Chiyotaikai pushed each other with hand thrusts, but Akebono overpowered his foe and thrust him out.
