ILH regular-season
champ Mid-Pac upset

Kamehameha and St. Louis made the Interscholastic League of Honolulu double-elimination baseball playoffs a little more interesting yesterday at Ala Wai Field.

By beating regular-season champion Mid-Pacific and defending league champion Iolani, previously unbeaten in the playoffs, they forced another pair of games tomorrow to determine who meets in the final.

Kamehameha (11-7 overall, 3-1 playoffs) will meet Mid-Pacific (13-4, 2-1) at 3:30 p.m. and St. Louis (12-5-1, 3-1) will face Iolani (12-4-1, 2-1) at 6 p.m. at Ala Wai Field.

The winners will meet for the playoff title on Tuesday at Aloha Stadium.

The Owls and Raiders would have advanced to the Tuesday game had they won yesterday.

If the playoffs winner on Tuesday is not regular-season champion Mid-Pacific, a playoff for the ILH championship between the playoff winner and the Owls will be held Thursday at the stadium.

bullet Kamehameha 14, Mid-Pacific 3: At Ala Wai, right-hander Syd Kawahakui pitched a three-hitter to lead the Warriors.

Adrian Contreras slammed a three-run homer and had four RBIs to lead Kamehameha's offense. Kaellan Briones had a two-run homer.

Junior outfielder Paki Lum continued his hot hitting for the Warriors, going 3-for-4 for the second straight game.

Kamehameha head coach Vern Ramie said Lum has hit better since being moved from third base to his more familiar outfield position a couple of weeks ago.

He said Kawahakui was due for the run support he got last night.

"Syd has been throwing well all year and at times we haven't supported him well," said Ramie. "But he's kept us in every ball game he has pitched this year."
