

Celebration of
freedom continues
The yearlong celebration of 100 years
of Philippine independence continues this weekend
with a pair of festivals in Waikiki.Saturday's festivities start with a 9 a.m. parade from Ala Moana Park to the fiesta site, Kapiolani Park, where the partying continues until 5 p.m. AT&T Filipino Fiesta
The Filipino Association of University Women will present a display on "Women of the Revolution"; entertainment is by Norlita Yere, Eddie Aguinaldo, Pestro, Manana Dancers, Family Tree Band, Sassa, Breeze and the Hawaii Filipino Martial Arts School.
Filipino foods such as lumpia and gisantes (stewed pork, tomatoes and peas) will be sold and AT&T will hold a drawing for a roundtrip to the Philippines, winner to be announced at 3 p.m.
Admission is free; as are shuttle rides from Ala Moana Center, 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
The Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center pays tribute to the culture and history of the Philippines Saturday and Sunday in the Fountain Courtyard. Filipiniana Festival
Saturday events: Entertainment begins with Pearl of the Orient traditional Philippine dances at 11 a.m. and continues until 2 p.m. with Escrima Academy of Hawaii, Del Mar School of Filipino Martial Arts Kali-Escrima, Teatro, Pamana Dancers, Silangan Singers and Hawaii Filipino Martial Arts School. Sample free desserts from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Sunday events: Dessert sampling and entertainment, 6 to 9 p.m., includes Pearl of the Orient, TAHO theater group, Waipahu High School Fil-Am Youth Club, Hawaii Pacific University Philippine Student Association and Ewa Plantation Singers.
Miss Oahu Filipina contestants and others will model garments from the pre-Spanish, Spanish and post-Spanish era Philippines.
