Kamehameha crushes
Punahou in ILH playoffs

Kamehameha routed Punahou, 21-8, last night at Ala Wai Field to eliminate the Buffanblu from the Interscholastic League of Honolulu double-elimination baseball playoffs.

Bronson Sardinha, Paki Lum and Hubert Pruett each had three RBIs to lead the Warriors, who advance to tomorrow's semifinals at Ala Wai.

Kamehameha (10-7 overall, 2-1 postseason) will face Mid-Pacific (13-3, 2-0) at 6 p.m. Defending league and state champion Iolani (12-3-1, 2-0) will meet St. Louis (11-5-1, 2-1) at 3 p.m.

Should Kamehameha and St. Louis win tomorrow, there will be two games at Ala Wai on Saturday: The Warriors would meet the Owls at 3:30 p.m., and the Raiders would face the Crusaders at 6 p.m.

Right-hander Ekolu Smith went five innings for the win against Punahou, striking out five and walking only one. Kent Okihiro took the loss.

The Buffanblu (10-7) led, 5-3, after two innings. But Kamehameha came up with four runs in the top of the third -- three of them with two outs -- to take the lead for good.

Lum hit a solo homer and Pruett launched a two-run shot in the fourth to give the Warriors (10-7) a 10-5 lead.

Leading 11-6 going into the sixth, they sent 15 batters to the plate to blow the game open.

"It was nice to see our young guys fight back and stay alive," Kamehameha head coach Vern Ramie said.

"We got great pitching from Ekolu Smith to keep us in the game. We've been getting decent pitching, but my pet peeve all season has been our lack of defense, and we didn't play really good defense tonight."

Punahou seeks fourth
straight boy’ golf title

Punahou will be seeking its fourth straight title in the Hawaii High School Athletic Association golf tournament, which begins today and ends Friday at the Kaanapali Golf Course on Maui.

The Buffanblu have won on three courses in that span: Kapalua (1995), Hapuna (1996) and Wailua (1997).

Punahou also won in 1970 at Ala Wai.

Maui won two straight titles before Punahou began its streak.

The individual golfer to watch is Punahou junior Jim Seki.

Seki won the Interscholastic league of Honolulu individual title on April 25 at the Hawaii Prince Golf Course with a 1-under 71.

On Sunday, Seki was the surprise winner in the Navy-Marine Invitational.

Seki tied veteran local golfer Will Coelho at even-par 216 after 54 holes of regulation, then won on the second playoff hole.

Seki was low amateur in the 1997 Hawaii State Open and 1998 Pearl Open.

Defending champion Norman Asao of Hawaii Baptist Academy also returns.

Golfers to watch for from the Oahu Interscholastic Association are Stan Sadaoka of Aiea and Justin Vendiola of Kahuku.

The girls' state title is up for grabs as three-time champion Anna Umemura of Punahou has graduated.
