MORRISON LEADS: At Kapalua, Maui, Mark Morrison of the Kona Country Club capped a 1-under-par round of 72 with an eagle on the 18th hole to take a one-stroke lead after the first round of the 36-hole GTE Hawaiian Tel Hall of Fame Championship yesterday.
Defending champion Brendan Moynihan of the Kapalua Plantation Course was at 73.
UH-HILO TO NATIONALS: At Pomona, Calif., the University of Hawaii-Hilo tennis team earned a spot in the 16-team NCAA Division II National Championships by beating UC-Davis yesterday, 5-4, at the West Regional Yesterday.
Carsten Eisenbarth, Pete Gutierrez and Grisena Hendreschke won singles matched for the Vulcans. Eisenbarth-Gutierrez and Flavio Nucci-Kris Jordan won doubles matches.
The team championships will be held in Springfield, Mo., Wednesday through Friday.
NETTLES, RESSING FIRST: Gary Nettles won the men's division and Mareike Ressing the women's title at the Cinco de Mayo 5-K run held yesterday from Ala Moana Beach Park to Aloha Tower.
Nettles, 36, finished in 16 minutes, 40 seconds. Cecilio Cisneros, 33, was second in 16:58.
Ressing, 27, turned in a time of 18:11 to beat runner-up Heidi Ballendorf, in 18:57.
FRITZ TAKES TRIATHLON: Kirk Fritz won the Waimea Adventure Triathlon in a time of 1 hour, 16 minutes, 15 seconds yesterday, while Kristi Cotton took the women's title in 1:26:43.
Fritz swam a half-mile in 7:20, biked 12.4 miles in 55:04 and ran 3.1 miles in 13:51. Chris Tang was second in 1:16:33.
Cotton did the swim in 8:59, the bike in 59:21 and the run in 18:23. Michelle Foster was second among women in 1:30:19.
