

Doc, Symphony
are spectacularDOC SEVERINSEN, vocalist Lynn Roberts and the Honolulu Symphony put on a spectacular salute to big bands last Friday and Saturday at the Concert Hall, earning a standing ovation. With Doc's hot trumpet and his three cohorts -- pianist Biff Hannon, bassist Larry Gray and drummer Dave Mancini -- showing the way, the aggregation took the crowd on a joy ride with hits by Harry James, Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, Woody Herman, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Artie Shaw, Bunny Berigan and even Harry Owens and Lawrence Welk. Roberts handled the Helen Forest and Helen O'Connell hits, "You Made Me Love You" and "Green Eyes"/ "Tangerine" as if they were her own, and swung with "Sunny Side of the Street" and "Chattanooga Choo-Choo." After the concert, Roberts, Doc and his trio played dance music for Symphony big donors at Restaurant Pier 7 ... Violinist Ignace Jang is featured in the "Beethoven and Strauss" Symphony concert tomorrow and Tuesday at the Concert Hall ...
Birthday cheer at Hoku's
BARBARA CAMPBELL marked a birthday at Hoku's at the Kahala Mandarin Monday and was charmed at her table by the singing of Gary Pacarro and Art Kalahiki and hula by Tiffini Hercules. Campbell, Outrigger Enterprises retail and leasing V.P., ran the '96 Honolulu Marathon in 3 hours, 52 minutes -- her best time. She dedicated that race to her dad, John Campbell, before he died. Barbara joined Outrigger after serving as president and CEO of DGM Group, managers for Waikele Center and Guam Premium Outlets. With DGM she became a member of the prestigious national Young President's Organization, one of only two women YPO members in Hawaii. The other is Lori Wong. Lori closed Andrew's restaurant Thursday after 13 months at Executive Centre ...DIAMOND Head Theatre previews "Damn Yankees" Wednesday and offers pupu and wine beforehand for its fund-raiser. Food by Russell Siu of 3660 on the Rise and wine from Richard Field will start things at 6 p.m. in the theater's gardens. Curtain is at 8. Tickets are $50, $75 and $100. PALOMINO marketing ace T.C. KHOE'S jet black hair was about to turn gray, she said, because travel delays made a group of Miss Universe contestants two hours late for chef Fred DeAngelo's dinner Sunday. Mayor Jeremy Harris had to cut out before they arrived, and Councilwoman Rene Mansho left to present a Hawaii Music Award. But she returned. Brook Lee, '97 Miss Universe, attended with fiance Sean Lee. And how did Sean land Brook? "Just lucky, I guess," said the Army Reserve major from Kaimuki High. Fashion designers Eric Chandler and Takeo attended. Spotting isle model Tina Kasuya with Dirk Fukushima, Chandler told lovely Tina, "If we were voting (for Miss Universe) now, you would win." Eric joked about getting yanked by security as he tried to get to contestants too soon. Delay aside, things went well, and T.C.'s hair is still black ...
