Aston now manages at Maui Islander hotel

Aston Hotels & Resorts is the new manager of the 374-unit Maui Islander hotel in Lahaina.

Aston was awarded the management contract by SVP Islander LLC, the partnership that acquired the hotel in January from its original developer, James Tweedt. Aston said it hired Jean Fredericks to serve as general manager. The owners plan to invest more than $1 million over the next 18 months in improvements at the 17-year-old hotel, Aston said.

The hotel consists of 11 two-story buildings spread over nearly 10 acres a block from the center of Lahaina. Accommodations range from single rooms to two-bedroom suites.

Continental Air links with Taiwan's EVA

Continental Airlines Inc. and Taiwan's EVA Air have entered a code-sharing agreement in which both carriers will sell seats on EVA flights to Taipei.

Flights covered by the agreement connect in Honolulu, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle and Newark.

Passengers traveling between the United States and Asia will receive reciprocal frequent-flier programs, shared airport lounges and through check-in to final destinations.

Code-sharing agreements allow airlines to attach their two-letter codes to each other's flights in travel agents' computers and then advertise and sell those flights as their own.

Cleveland Indians may be going public

CHICAGO -- The Cleveland Indians' owner plans a stock offering that would make the major league baseball team the first to be owned directly by the public, the Chicago Tribune reported today.

The move might be intended to raise cash for owner Richard Jacobs to bid for the National Football League franchise awarded this week to Cleveland for the 1999 season, the Tribune reported.

Baseball owners approved the Indians' proposal for a public stock offering last summer, the Tribune reported, citing unidentified sources. An announcement could come within the next week or so, the newspaper said.

The plan calls for the Indians to issue two classes of stock, with Jacobs maintaining control of voting shares.

Some other major league teams already are owned by publicly traded companies. Walt Disney Co. owns the Anaheim Angels, Time Warner Inc. owns the Atlanta Braves, News Corp. owns the Los Angeles Dodgers, and Tribune Co. owns the Chicago Cubs.
