And Hawaii expects another
letter of intent to arrive today

And then there was one.

With yesterday's signing of four recruits, and the assurance that another letter would arrive today, the University of Hawaii coaching staff was waiting on one football player to complete the 1998 class.

As expected, Snow (Utah) Junior College quarterback Fred Salanoa's letter of intent was received yesterday. Ditto for offensive lineman Kynan Fortney of Trinity (Texas) Valley Junior College, cornerback James Polk of Ranger (Texas) Junior College and tailback Robert Grant of Skyline High School in Oakland, Calif.

Fortney was a junior college All-America.

Radford High's Salanoa played only one season in junior college. That means he will have four years to play three.

Polk was supposed to be a part of last year's recruiting class, but didn't meet academic standards.

Like Salanoa, he will have four years to play three.

UH coaches talked with cornerback Sedric Hurns of Taft High School in Los Angeles. He told recruiting coordinator Don Dillon his letter would arrive today.

That leaves cornerback Jayson Thompson of Scottsdale (Ariz.) Community College.

If letters from Hurns and Thompson arrive today, UH will have 26 signees.

"We're down to one scholarship, but we're not sure what is happening there," Dillon said. "Getting these letters today was a relief because you never know what's going to happen until the letters actually arrive.

"Overall, we're very pleased with the recruits we have in here. The challenge now will be getting some of them academically eligible. But we're fairly confident we can get most everybody in school by the summer."
