Sony new sponsor
for Waialae tourney

It's official. Sony will be the new sponsor of the PGA Tour event at the Waialae Country Club that replaces the United Airlines Hawaiian Open next January 14-17.

Tentatively named the Sony Open in Hawaii, it will be a $2.6 million event. In the PGA Tour's new television package, the Sony Open will follow the Mercedes Championship, to be played the preceding week at the Kapalua Resort on Maui.

"We think this back-to-back start is the logical way to kick off the season," said Ric Clarson, vice president of the PGA Tour, yesterday at Gov. Ben Cayetano's office.

The Sony tournament is scheduled to run for the next four years, with the prize money increasing to $3.4 million in 2002.

The Hawaiian Open -- sponsored by United Airlines for 33 years -- will be held next week at Waialae.
