List shows some improvement

By Al Chase

Paul List is still listed in critical condition at Straub Clinic and Hospital but he has shown some improvement, especially in his battle with pneumonia, according to his brother David.

"He is still weak and sleeps most of the time, but the doctor is happy with the progress and says it's in the right direction," David said yesterday. "The signs of improvement obviously are a boost for all of us."

The next step, when Paul has regained enough strength, is to put him on a commercial flight to Los Angeles where he would be curtained off from other passengers and accompanied by an air nurse. The cost is approximately $3,000.

This would allow him to start an experimental treatment program at UCLA to combat Hodgkin's Disease, which he has been fighting for over a year now. He was scheduled to begin the experimental treatment this past Tuesday.

"I can't say enough about the support of the people," David said.

John Matias, List's roommate when they played baseball for the University of Hawaii, said "Paul has been really happy with the response and his brother just can't believe it. His brother said 'L.A. people would never do anything like this, that Hawaii people are clutch.' "

Contributions to the Paul List Donation have reached $1,600 and are being accepted at any branch of American Savings Bank, account number 31-638690. Contributions can be mailed to the Hawaii Kai Branch of American Savings Bank, 7192 Kalanianaole Highway, Honolulu, HI 96825.
