Babewatch, Burdon on tap
THIS coming weekend would seem to be a good one to roll on out to the North Shore and rock. You can rock to the music of Eric Burdon and the I Band -- the Animals have been put out to pasture -- and Willie Chambers, who with his Chambers Brothers made "Time Has Come Today" something of a rock anthem. Ten bucks gets you in to see and hear them. Or you can roll your eyes at the veritable bevy of beauties Ron Rice has rounded up to compete in his Miss Hawaiian Tropic competition, the finals of which are Saturday afternoon before the concert. That part of the show is free. Over 200 gorgeous young women will be competing and the mistress of ceremonies is the beautiful and athletic Traci Bingham from "Babewatch." I mean "Baywatch." One of the Hawaiian Tropic women to be on the lookout for is Lola Corwin. I met her at the U.S. Olympic Committee fund-raiser at the Ihilani a few weeks ago. I later rediscovered her, sans Hawaiian Tropic attire, on the Playboy page on the Internet ...
AH, bliss: That's how Loretta Ables, featured singer in the Lewers Lounge of the Halekulani, pronounces her name. She and musicians Jim Howard and Bruce Hamada celebrate their eighth year in the lounge in December and will be featured tomorrow morning on KHON-TV's early news show ... L'Uraku chef Hiroshi Fukui will be showcasing his talents at Liberty House Kahala Mall Saturday from 12 to 1 p.m. ... And at the same time, Noah French, handsome new pastry chef at Roy's, will be at Liberty House Ala Moana in Henry's Market. French was at Roy's in Kahana when I dined there last week and whipped up two souffles that were to die for. So, too, many young women will feel, is he ...
Scrupulous behavior
YOU see some unusual over-the-top attire at Scruples nightclub, but everyone was punctilious to a fault the other night when numerous U.S. Marines in dress uniforms and their ladies in formal gowns stopped by after the annual Marine Ball. And less formal but equally picture perfect were the Miss Hawaiian Tropic contestants whom Ron Rice brought in. Rice has been a good pal of owners Fred Piluso and Dave Schutter since the club played host to the pageant when it was held in Waikiki before moving to Turtle Bay ...SPEAKING of Schutter, Carl Smigielski, principal broker of Sandwich Isles Realty, says he's closed the sale on the Schutter Estate in Kahala for $7.2 million. Kirin of Japan was the purchaser. It was another Japanese buyer represented by Smigielski who bought the nearby Keck Estate for $11 million.
BIGGEST non-surprise story of the year was Elisa Yadao leaping into a lifeboat to escape the SS Bishop Estate and join KHNL-TV. Being a spokesperson for that group had to be one of the most difficult jobs in town. Now if in her new position she could get morning weatherman Guy Hagi to talk about other aspects of the weather than surfing, which apparently is a passion in his life, I'll be indebted to her forever. Most people interested in surfing are already out there doing it, and the rest of us want to know if it will rain ...
Sign of the Times
IT was somehow staggering to see the headline "Madonna Graces Holiday Stamp," because we automatically assumed it was referring to the star of "Evita." ... Cheeseburgers in Paradise will be a winner, I predict, due to its 1950-ish location, right on a ground-floor corner of Kalakaua across the street from the beach. Just like the old days -- walk in and sit down ...
