horse around
Special to the Star-BulletinIN Hawaii a horse is a horse is a horse, unless, of course, that particular horse is a Lipizzaner stallion performing at the show at the Blaisdell Arena. Those who appreciate world-class horses can rhapsodize at length about the physical characteristics of the Lipizzaner and the precision with which they execute the stylized moves and maneuvers of classic European dressage. Anyone who appreciates the challenge of working with animals will find this show impressive as well. Kids will love the horses.
Royal Lipizzaner Stallions Today, 4, 7:30 p.m.; tomorrow, 7:30 p.m.; Blaisdell Arena; $22.50, $18.50
The artistry of horse and rider moving as one is beautiful to see. It's a far cry from watching someone dump a mule into a tank of water as entertainment for geeks at a carnival sideshow!
The heart of the show is the form of classic European riding known as dressage. Rider and well-trained horse perform as a single unit with the rider remaining almost motionless. Students of riding or polo will pick out the riders' subtle cues to their mounts. Those not born or raised in the saddle receive an informative introduction to the equestrian arts in the form of a demonstration segment early in the show.
Much of the show consists of synchronized maneuvers by two, three, four or six riders . One of the other early segments demonstrates training procedures and primes the audience for "Airs Above The Ground." This is the most visually dramatic part of the show as individual equine stars either rear up on hind legs and pose - or leap clear of the ground - on command.
Two non-Lipizzaner horses - an Arabian and an Andalusian - appear in segments honoring the origins of the line in Moorish Spain.
Horse lovers will love these horses, of course. The cultural aspects we all can endorse. The classic traditions of riding a horse. Educational fun in a G-rated course on the lore of a truly remarkable horse.
Kids will be fascinated.
