State girls volleyball set

The 29th annual Hawaii High School Athletic Association Girls Volleyball Tournament will be held Thursday through Saturday at the Waiakea Gymnasium and Afook Chinen Civic Auditorium in Hilo.

Pool play will be held Friday starting at 2 p.m. The pools are: A: Punahou, Kohala and Farrington. B: Waianae, Maui and Waiakea. C: Hilo, Kamehameha and Kalaheo. D: Molokai, Waimea and Pearl City.

Quarterfinals start Friday at 2:30 p.m. at Afook-Chinen Civic Center. The third-place game is Saturday at 5:30 p.m. with the final at 7:30.

VULCAN QUALIFIES: University of Hawaii-Hilo senior Dawn Ratay qualified for the NCAA Division II Cross Country championships by finishing third at the Western Regional, Saturday at Cal Poly Pomona, in Pomona, Calif.

Ratay's time was 18 minutes, 8.7 seconds. The Division II championships will be held November 22 in Kenosha, Wis.

KARATE CHAMPIONS: The International Karate Federation dominated the 15th annual International Shobukai Karate Tournament held in Shinagawa, Japan, on Nov. 1.

Gold medal winners from Hawaii were: Shannon Nishi (Kata Male and Female, 14 and under); Sandra Obrero (Kata Male and Female, 18 and above); Sandra Pimental (Kumite Male and Female, 10-11); Chad Nishi (Kumite Male and Female 12-15); Gino Bough (Kumite Male and Female, 16-17); Barbara Chinen (Kumite Women Black Belt).
