Kyleen Lee wants to be a positive role model in society. Striving to be a good example
She has become especially aware of how important that is since attending the World Leadership Congress at Purdue University last July. She and Kahuku High School student Daniel Evans represented Hawaii at the conference.
"Each day had a theme like world hunger or technology," Lee said. Student ambassadors represented every state and more than 30 countries. "It was based on how children of today are making futures for tomorrow."
Lee said the nine-day gathering motivated her to "pursue goals in life, to be a positive role model, and make contributions to my society."
She said she is most concerned about the deterioration of the family. "It's so demoralizing. Within my community I want to set a positive example."
Lee said she was chosen to attend the world conference based on leadership skills, and calls herself "very vocal and outgoing." She serves as a class officer and also belongs to numerous clubs at St. Andrew's Priory.
Applicants also wrote essays describing themselves and what they believe make good leaders. Her requirements: good communication, flexibility, honesty, trustworthiness.
She singled out Mikhail Gorbachev, the leader of the former Soviet Union who helped create what Russia is today. "He united Russia after all the problems. He was a strong leader at the time."
