Musashimaru remains
tied for lead with
Takanohana

TOKYO -- Yokozuna (grand champion) Takanohana and ozeki (champion) Musashimaru maintained a share of the lead with 11-1 records today in the 15-day Autumn Grand Sumo tournament.

The closest rivals of the co-leaders at 9-3 were yokozuna Akebono and two ozekis, Wakanohana s and Takanonami.

Takanohana, seeking his 18th tournament victory, dodged Tochiazuma's pushing attempts skillfully and sent him out from behind.

Musashimaru (Fiamalu Penitani from Hawaii) pushed out Akinoshima after blocking his foe's pushing attack.

In the day's final bout, Akebono (Chad Rowan from Hawaii) held off Wakanohana's pulling attempt and thrust him out.

Akebono, who injured his left knee in his bout against Takatoriki yesterday, was advised by stablemaster Azumazaki to sit out the rest of the tournament . But the grand champion decided to continue competing.

Takanonami pulled down Mitoizumi.

Konishiki (Salevaa Atisanoe from Hawaii) drove Ganyu to the ring's edge in the initial charge, but Ganyu pushed back and forced him out.

Konishiki is 0-8 with four absences. He stayed out of the tournament for four days because of inflammation in both feet and his left calf.

Yamato (George Kalima from Hawaii) of a juryo division wrestler competing today in the main draw, charged Akinoshu with a series of hand thrusts and sent him out for his 10th victory against two defeats.
