Star-BulletinServices for the Rev. Abraham Kahikina Akaka were to begin today with a 4 p.m. viewing of his body in Kawaiahao Church. Akaka, 80, a retired pastor of the historic church, died Sept. 10.
His son, Jeffrey Lee Alohilani Akaka, advised the 2,000 to 3,000 people expected to attended services today and tomorrow that no parking will be allowed on the church grounds.
Nearby state and city metered parking lots have been made available for free, he said.
"The main concern that we have was that there will not be any parking at Kawaiahao Church because we're erecting a tent in the parking lot to accommodate people who won't be able to fit inside," he said.
People can park at the city municipal lot -- at Alapai and Beretania streets -- after 4 p.m. today.
A state parking lot at Punchbowl and Halekauwila streets will be available after 5 p.m. Parking will be free at both lots all day tomorrow. Curb-side drop-off will be allowed. The church has accommodations to assist those who are disabled.
Wake services will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today and will include hymns, music and Scripture readings. Viewing will continue until 10 p.m.
Friends may call again at the church after 8 a.m. tomorrow, with a funeral to begin at 9:30 a.m. Pualani Suzanne, one of Akaka's daughters, will make some remarks, while his son will deliver a eulogy.
Also speaking will be Kamehameha Schools President Michael Chun, who will discuss Akaka's strong promotion of education among Hawaiians.
Former Honolulu City Councilman Leigh-Wai Doo will speak on the reverend's role in the community, while U.S. Sen. Daniel Akaka will speak on his brother's influence nationally and with his family.
The Rev. Ted Robinson will discuss Akaka's work as a religious leader.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to a favorite charity or to the Rev. Abraham Akaka Ministries Foundation, 2825 S. King St., No. 3401, Honolulu 96826. Donations can also be made to the family to offset funeral expenses.
Burial will be follow at Hook Chu Cemetery, where Akaka's parents are buried.
