Woodcrafter's art--duck sculpture.

Fine art show
out of the woods

"Woods of Hawai'i" doesn't feature famous Woods like Tiger or Ben, but it does have a variety of exotic woods worked into fabulous examples of the craftperson's art. Your last chance to see this show is this weekend, at Pier 10 at Aloha Tower Marketplace.

"Woods of Hawai'i" or "Na La'au of Hawai'i" is presented by the Hawaii Forest Industry Association, an organization devoted to the notion of exotic woods as a cash crop. After all, if the sugar plantations had started planting koa a couple of decades ago, the wood wouldn't be endangered and protected, but it would still be highly prized and expensive.

More information on the exhibit is available at the web site http://www.koaseeds.com, where images of last year's show are also displayed. The show is open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. through Sunday. Call 239-5517 for more information.

In other woody news, fine woodworkers Martin and MacArthur are hosting workshop tours and an anniversary sale.

M&M's 10,000-square foot workshop, where koa furniture is created similar to Hawaiian monarchy stylings, plus a Shaker-inspired line, will be open for tour at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Sept. 26 through 28 at 1815 Kahai St. You can see how the crafters handmatch, machine, carve, polish and oil the woods, which include koa and other exotics.

Like original artwork, each piece is hand-signed and dated.

M&M furniture will be on sale these days for up to 50 percent off regular prices at the workshop.

More sale items will be available at the showrooms at Gentry Pacific Center and Aloha Tower Marketplace Sept. 29 to Oct. 5.
