Isle folks storm
Vegas for gameTHE political acumen of Gov. Ben Cayetano will be on the line tomorrow when he and first lady Vicky watch the UH Rainbow Warriors take on UNLV in Vegas. Naturally, the governor is expected to root for the UH team, but then his grandson, Micah Ancheta, plays for UNLV, and family, after all, is family. There'll be lots of UH fans in the stands, Vegas being a popular destination for gambling-hungry isle residents, so you can bet they'll be watching the guv closely ... Other isle folks who'll be at the game include Don Murphy, who's contributed much to the football program over the years and who's been invited to watch this game without so much as flipping a burger, let alone provide an entire training table for the team ... Also on hand will be Emme Tomimbang, doubtlessly filming for a future "Island Moments" TV show, along with the Cruz Brothers (Ernie and John) plus Amy Gilliom and Willie K. The latter perform at tonight's UH Lettermen's reception at the Stardust Hotel. Emme and Jim Donovan emcee.
YOU know how lawyers love to walk in lockstep? Well, Miss Hawaii USA Leslie-Ann Lum, who's also an attorney, agreed to participate in the 1997 Memory Walk tomorrow morning to benefit the Alzheimer's Association. Then, Karin McCorriston of the McCorriston Miho Miller Mukai firm laid down the law, so to speak, and a number of lawyers and staffers agreed to walk with one of their own. Miss Hawaii Teen USA Mahana Walters also joins the walk.
FORMER isle resident Judy Neale e-mails from Chicago about a party she attended at Fermilab where she observed "several of the world's top nuclear physicists getting into a major huddle." And what brought about this high-tech confab? The corkscrew that the party committee had brought to the lab wasn't working, she reports, "and they were thrashing around trying to find which of them owned Swiss Army knives and which of those knives had corkscrews that worked or could be properly used by someone in the crowd." There they were in the middle of a research facility holding one of the world's biggest atom smashers -- a zero gradient proton-synchrotron -- surrounded by the scientists who do experiments on it. "They can split atoms," Neale observed, "but they can barely open a bottle of wine." Her final comment was a gem: "The relief when they succeeded was palpable, less because the wine was finally accessible, but because they'd successfully completed an experiment. Ain't science grand?" ... Shhh. Geniuses at work!
THERE'LL be some blockbuster entertainment when Blockbuster opens its Kapiolani Super Store at the site of the old Kapiolani Theater tomorrow and Sunday. Slated to perform tomorrow are Dennis Kamakahi and George Kuo (fresh from the Hollywood Bowl), Nedward Ka'apana, Kapena, Forte and Henry Kapono. Customers who rent videos can give the prize wheel a spin to win special Blockbuster merchandise ...
SHOOTING wraps tomorrow on the Hollywood movie "6 Days/7 Nights" on Kauai, which as I explained earlier is a tour package that simply doesn't happen. It's always "6 Nights/7 Days" but Hollywood is in the business of packaging movies and not tours. Besides star Harrison Ford, ending their work tomorrow will be Anne Heche, who took time off to be with girlfriend Ellen DeGeneres at the Emmys, and David Schwimmer, who plays Ross on "Friends" and now can rejoin his TV sitcom pals for further filming ... Nights and Days
