Playground pirate
deemed unsafe

What ever happened to the huge and wonderful pirate figure in the Date Street Mini-Park?

Patti Nagao, spokeswoman for the city Department of Parks and Recreation, said district manager Toni Robinson recalls the figure had to be removed about three years ago.

"It was deemed unsafe ... as part of the playground equipment, the structure was rusting and was not in compliance with the national playground standards," she said.

"My understanding is the structure itself was made of metal and the face of it was a painted, wooden face. It was a children's playground apparatus, so it was colorful, and I'm sure that's the reason it was so appealing."
