The recent item about Hawaiian Brian's Billiards made me wonder why Kalani and Kaiser high schools take students there on field trips. I don't think that's appropriate. I know this occurred at both schools during the summer and last year at Kalani. Students learn, have fun
in special class at BriansKaiser students have not gone on school trips there, although the junior and senior classes last year separately held class days at the World Cafe, which has billiards tables, said Principal Gayle Sugita.
Kalani Principal Randiann Porras-Tang did confirm that Kalani students went to Hawaiian Brian's either as part of physical education or special motivation classes, the latter "for kids who are bright, but who have a difficult time learning, attendance problems," etc.
The billiards parlor is "pretty much empty" when the classes go there and students hear about what it takes to start a business, about profit and losses and so on. "It's not just fun, but also some learning," Porras-Tang said.
She emphasized students are supervised and "we don't advocate negative behavior."
Meanwhile, at Kaiser, Sugita said the senior and junior classes voted to go to the World Cafe, an activity approved by the administration and by parents who had to sign permission slips.
The activities were held during the day and the closed bar area was off limits, Sugita said. "Kids were able to dance, sing karaoke, lip-synch and play billiards," she said. There was also a luncheon buffet and the price was right, she said.
