Impressive day
for Jackson

Jodi Jackson had a first-place finish in the Waimea Ocean Medley (swim, kayak, paddleboard), three second-place finishes and a third in the Hawaiian Airlines Open Ocean Challenge held at Waimea Bay yesterday.

Jackson, 20, a Punahou graduate who swims for Stanford, was timed in 26 minutes, 16 seconds, more than a minute and a half better than runner-up Shannon Bell of Canada.

Stacey Gartrell, fourth in the 800-meter freestyle at the 1996 Olympics for Australia, won the 500-meter surf swim and the run-swim-run.

On the men's side, Trent Bray of New Zealand won the surf swim and the run-swim-run while Australia's Steve Pullen finished first in the 1-mile paddleboard and the ocean medley.

TRITONS PREVAIL: Christy Abiziad scored a goal and assisted on two others as defending NCAA Division III champion UC San Diego blanked California Baptist, 4-0, in the opening match of the Hawaii Pacific University Women's Soccer Kick-Off Classic yesterday at HPU's Windward Campus field.

HPU opens its season tomorrow at 4 p.m. vs. UC San Diego.

SALUD BACK IN ACTION: After a six-month layoff, former Hawaii resident Jesus Salud returned to the boxing ring last Monday and stopped Manual Arellano in the second round of a fight in Tijuana, Mexico.

Salud (55-9) caught Arellano (18-5) with a short right early in the second and stopped him with another right.

Salud weighed 124 pounds, Arellano 125-1/2.
