Borders, Waikele: History of Waipahu's social studies curriculum, 11 a.m. Aug. 21. Part of the Centennial Celebration's Focus on Education in Schools. Information, 676-6699.

Bicycle race: Pacific Velo and Oahu Cycling Team presents Oahu Omnium Bicycle Race, Aug. 23-24. There will be three races. The 7.2-mile Time Trial Race goes from the Thompson Corner vicinity toward Schofield and back. The 4.6-mile triangular Road Race goes from Wilikina Drive to Kaukonahua Road to Kamehameha Highway. The Criterium race goes along King, Beretania, Punchbowl and Alapai streets. Cost: $15, Time Trial; $20, Road Race; $15, Criterium; or $45, all three races. Competitors must hold a full-year or one-day USCF license. Unlicensed competitors can become licensed by completing the necessary forms and paying $3. No late entries. Pre-registrants can pickup packets between 10 a.m.-7 p.m., Aug. 20-21, Kapahulu Island Triathlon and Bike. Hawaii Nature Center: Betty Nakamura leads a 4-mile hike, Aug. 23, Kaena Point Natural Area Reserve. Cost: $7. Reservations required. Call 955-0100.

"Skatin' Safari": Second Annual In-line Skating Event, 4-7 p.m. Aug. 23 and Sept. 27, Honolulu Zoo. Skating instruction, 5-6 p.m. Participants must wear full safety gear and children under 12 must be accompanied by a "skating" adult. Limited supply of skates and safety gear available for rental with a picture ID. Pre-registration: $5, one day; $8 two days; and $10, three days. Same-day registration: $10. Information, 948-6848.

"Holo Malie Fun Walk/Run: Tenth annual 5.2-mile walk/run for Halau Na Pualei o Likolehua, Life Foundation and Punana Leo O Hawaii, 7 a.m. Aug. 24. Runners will begin at Aloha Tower, continue to Ala Moana Park, and return to Aloha Tower. Cost: $25. Entertainment begins at 7:30 a.m. with an awards ceremony to follow. Information, 676-0056.

Hawaiian Trail and Mountain Club: Six-mile intermediate hike, Pauoa Woods, 8 a.m. Aug. 24. Cost: $2. Bring lunch and water. Wear sturdy shoes and clothing. Reservations with John Hoover, 528-1206.

Honolulu Zoo: Zoo opens at 8 a.m. on the first and third Wednesdays of the month. General admission $6; $2 with Yum Yum Tree senior card. First Wednesdays feature a botanical tour at 8:45 a.m. for $2 more. Third Wednesdays, tai chi practice begins 8 a.m. Call 971-7174.
