Four Hawaii
surfers advance

HOSSEGOR, France -- It was a good day for Hawaii surfers in the first round of the Rip Curl Hossegor Pro yesterday.

Ross Williams, Shawn Sutton, Conan Hayes and Kaipo Jaquias all won their heats to move directly to round three.

Williams built an early lead in winning his heat in the tricky high tide conditions while Sutton relied on the last and biggest wave of his heat to edge American Taylor Knox and Brazilian Jojo Olivenca.

Hawaiian wildcard Pancho Sullivan will have to advance through round two after losing in round one.

TIE FOR FIRST: Marge Kiessling and June Ho had 66s yesterday to share overall low net honors after the first round of the Oahu Country Club Ladies Invitational golf tournament.

Mal-Ja Kwon is the overall low gross leader with an 81.

HAWAII IMPROVES TO 2-1: Kellan Briones and Landon Amoy paired hits to spark Hawaii past host Las Vegas, 7-2, in the USABA baseball tournament for 15-year olds Wednesday.

The win improved Hawaii's record to 2-1 in the elimination round. Hawaii met Glendora, Calif., also 2-1, this morning.

COLIN SHINES: Kathy Colin of Hawaii was left out of the results for the National Canoe/Kayak Championships that were published Wednesday.

A graduate of Punahou who competes for the Seattle Canoe Club, she finished first in the K-4 200 and 500 races, second in the K-1 1,000, third in the K-2 1,000, and sixth in the K-1 200 and 500 races.

WAHINE PEP RALLY: There will be a pep rally for the University of Hawaii women's volleyball team from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. tomorrow at the Ala Moana Center Stage.

There will be drawings for prizes and volleyball trivia questions for tickets.

Head coach Dave Shoji, his staff and all the Wahine players are scheduled to be there.

LABOR DAY WEEKEND BIKE TREK: The annual Labor Day Weekend Bicycle Trek, a benefit for the American Lung Association of Hawaii, is schedule for Aug. 30-31 and Sept. 1 on the Big Island.

The ride begins in Hilo and finishes in Kailua-Kona.

Registration fee is $125 with riders asked to collect a minimum of $500 in pledges.

The fee includes transportation from Honolulu and neighbor islands to the Big Island and return for riders and bikes, catered meals, snacks, support crew and medical and communications support.

PINEAPPLE CUP TENNIS: Top junior tennis players from around the world will to compete in the first Pineapple Cup International Junior Tennis Championships, Sept. 20-27 at the Mauna Lani Bay Hotel.

The event, sanctioned by the United States Tennis Association, will have boys and girls draws in singles and doubles, as well as mixed doubles. Hawaii's top-ranked players in the boys and girls 18's will receive a wild-card entry into the main draw.
