








MIDLAND, Texas -- After dropping into the loser's bracket with a 1-0 loss to the No. 2-ranked Lakewood Rebels of Southern California, the Pearl City Pearls came back to win two games and stay alive in the ASA National softball championships for 12-year-olds yesterday. Pearls advance in
national softball tourneyThe Pearls beat the Lincoln, Neb., Swingers in their second game of the day, 2-1, as winning pitcher Erin Sing Chow allowed only two hits.
The Pearls then beat the Arizona Destiny, 1-0, on another two-hitter by Sing Chow. Jocelyn Tamayo had two hits for Pearl City in that game.
OLOMANA WINS AGAIN: The Olomana baseball team won its third consecutive Oahu Summer Baseball League championship with a 4-2 victory over the Rangers Sunday at Ala Wai Field.
Eugene Myers threw five shutout innings and Robert Medeiros homered for Olomana.
Robbie Robinson pitched a four-hitter earlier in the day as Olomana handed the previously unbeaten Rangers a 4-1 setback to reach the championship game.
HAWAII TEAM LOSES TWO: The Hawaii Rainbows lost twice at the CABA 9-year-old World Series Sunday at Charles City, Iowa.
Georgia beat Hawaii, 12-6. That was followed by a 14-3 victory by Texas over Hawaii.
CHAMPIONSHIP REGATTA: The J-24 State Championship sailing regatta will be held Saturday and Sunday in the waters off Magic Island.
The event will determine Hawaii's representatives to the 1998 J-24 World Championship to be held in San Francisco.

OVER-THE-LINE SOFTBALL: The Hawaii State Over-The-Line Softball Championship will be played Aug, 23 and 24 at Kapiolani Park.
Over-The-Line softball consists of three-person teams in men's and women's open divisions. The entry fee, $48 per team, is due Aug. 19.

AIU COLORADO COACH: Kamehameha Schools graduate Pi'i Aiu is the new head women's volleyball coach at Colorado.
Aiu, an assistant for the Lady Buffs for the past seven years, succeeds Brad Saindon, who resigned to become the head coach for the Australian women's national team.
HOOPS FOR FUN: Applications are still being accepted for the inaugural Hoops For Fun, a 3-on-3 basketball tournament Saturday at Hawaii Kai Towne Center.
The tournament is open to boys and girls in 9-11, 12-14 and 15-17 age-group divisions. Special needs and wheelchair participants are encouraged to register.
The entry fee is $40 per team and includes a T-shirt. Play runs from 11 a.m.-3 p.m.
