It used to be that when you called bulky item collection, they would pick up within one-two days. Recently, I called to say I had a broken chair, an old radiator, etc. and they gave me a date one week away. When they didn't come, I called back and was told it would take another week because they were behind schedule. Two weeks is unsatisfactory. Within reason, I'm sure my neighbors don't mind, but it is unsightly to have junk sitting out for two weeks. Why can't they pick it up sooner? Two weeks isnt bad
for bulky item pickupActually, officials think two weeks isn't bad, but they're working on a plan to give you a more exact pickup time.
You live in the Honolulu District -- roughly from Halawa Stream, including Foster Village, to Hawaii Kai -- which means bulky item pickup is handled by the city Division of Refuse Collection and Disposal. In other areas, the Division of Road Maintenance does the job.
"To go from one end of the district to the other in two weeks time is good, under the present system," said refuse collection administrator David Shiraishi.
However, "We do fall behind on the schedule and that's what we're trying to improve," he said.
There are three crews. One basically picks up any appliance that may have contained or still contains Freon, such as refrigerators, freezers and heat pumps. Another will haul away anything made of metal, such as washers, driers, water heaters and shelving, to a recycler. The third picks up the rest. If need be, one crew will assist another, Shiraishi said.
