Diane Schulte's quiet nature may not exude leadership, but her perseverance and sincerity do. She won't let you down
"If you looked at her in a group of eighth-graders, you would not realize she was a leader," said teacher Shirley Momiyama, "because she is very unassuming."
But as president of Trinity Lutheran School's Jr. Beta Club, the 14-year-old headed such projects as cleaning Fred Wright Park in Wahiawa, feeding the homeless at a downtown shelter and preparing drug-awareness materials for 200 students and faculty.
"There wasn't a time when she let down," said Momiyama. "Each time there was a project, she did whatever was necessary."
Even if it meant enduring the repetition of helping make 3,000 red ribbons for the International AIDS Day. "After a while my thumbs got sore," said Diane, the daughter of Jan and Jeff Schulte. "But it was something fun to do."
Diane was one of 25 Jr. Beta members nationwide to receive the club's Harris Leadership Award.
"You can't just depend on doing it all yourself," she said. "You have to have people help and encourage them to help you."
Diane, who will attend Punahou School this fall, graduated as Trinity Lutheran's class valedictorian.
She was always there for those having trouble with class work, said teacher Gerry Keirnan. "Whenever anybody would need help," she said, "Diane would be the first to offer."
