Phone books for islands
can be ordered for free

Did you know that as a private citizen, you cannot get a neighbor island telephone directory here? You have to call a number in Texas and order one. Why is that?

It's not true that you have to call Texas to get a GTE Hawaiian Tel directory.

"Any resident of Hawaii who has telephone service can get a free directory for any island," said Hawaiian Tel spokesman Calvin Tadaki.

Just call 1-800-888-8448. He's puzzled about where you got your information, as the number is not for a Texas location.

Your order will be taken at the center, then relayed to Oahu, where GTE Directories' warehouse is located, Tadaki said.

Hawaii Island directories will be available to off-island subscribers in mid-August, while Maui County and Kauai directories will be available in mid-September, Tadaki said.
