Bunk cot handy
for surprise guests

Ever need a little extra space for company that decides to stay over? Or how about when your kid invites some extra buddies to spent the night?

You like camping but hate lying on hard ground; or maybe you just want to sleep on your deck under the stars on something more comfortable than wood or cement.

An inexpensive solution can be found at Hawaii Outdoor World & Climbers' Paradise at 214 Sand Island Access Road. The bunk cot -- that's right, a double-decker version of the traditional army cot -- can handle more than 300 pounds of tired flesh. Hawaii Outdoor World & Climbers' Paradise sells the cot for $99.

This cot uses strong aluminum framing with braces all over the place to hold rigid plastic-canvas beddings. And the whole unit weighs less than 10 pounds, takes less than a couple minutes to erect, and easily fits into a closet when folded back up.

The bunk cot stands less than 4-feet high. Four foot-long extension poles slide into the corners of the bottom cot. The center section of the top cot has two elongated poles to fit snugly into the lower cot. A gentle push down slides everything firmly into place.

Is it stable? Well, I've used it and I'm more than 200 pounds. There was no swaying, no shaking and the bedding remained firm. And kids seem to love the oddness of sleeping on it.

Granted, the bottom bunk is a bit tough to slide into -- of course you can just have the sleeper lay down on it before you attach the top bunk.

But the good news about the bottom bunk is that you're protected from any rain by the top section.

Hey, keep it in your office for that afternoon nap.
