Champagne toast
with Roy Yamaguchi

"Hawaii Cooks With Roy Yamaguchi" looks at the world's "most festive" beverage and the ties it has to the islands in an encore episode, 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Yamaguchi will also demonstrate the versatility champagne has in Euro-Asian cooking.

Celebrate India's Independence: Zaffron Indian Restaurant prepares a vegetarian dinner to enjoy while watching a variety program, 6 p.m. Aug. 15, Honolulu Zoo, next to the Gandhi Statue. Beer tasting: Sam Choy's Breakfast, Lunch and Crab is offering four pupus, a dessert and a taste of their five new beers on Aug. 18.

For $25, diners can enjoy "Bumbucha Stout," "Ehu Ale," "Bruddah's Cream Ale," "S-Team Lager" and "Skipper Sam's Hefe-Weizen." To top it off, a "real beer float" will be served for dessert. Reserve at 545-7979 by Aug. 15.

Lanai Visiting Artist Program: Cory Schreiber, chef and owner of Wildwood Restaurant in Portland, Ore., brings the Pacific Northwest to Hawaii.

Schreiber will be holding a free cooking class featuring Fennel-Cured Salmon With a Cucumber and Red Onion Salad, 3:30 p.m. Aug. 17 at the Lodge at Koele. He also will prepare two signature dinners, 6-10 p.m. Aug. 16-17, in the formal dining room. Cost: $65 per night. Reserve at (800) 321-4666.

Perk up your coffee: Black & Decker offers tips, techniques and recipes to blend, mix and create in their "Beans 'n Brew" booklet by Tom Lacalamita.

"Barbeque Rib Cook-Off": Professional and amateur cooks are wanted to prepare the "best ribs in Hawaii," 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Aug. 23, Windward City Shopping Center. The grand prize is $1,500.

Each four-member team will receive a table and 60 pounds of ribs to create their masterpiece. A first place prize of $500 will be given for the best professional entry and the best amateur entry.

Bakers can also enter the apple pie contest. Entry fee is $10 and the winner will receive $100.

All proceeds go to United Cerebral Palsy.
