Hawaii residents can sample innovative new sounds from legendary jazz musician Joe Sample this week. Jazz sampler
The Hawaii tour aims to promote Sample's newest release, "Sample This," a 74-minute compilation of reshaped songs from 1970 to 1982.
The collection features seven popular songs from Sample's solo career and seven from his years with the Crusaders. But what's new about these old songs is that they have been redone in radically different ways. "Street Life," for example, was originally a vocal piece Sample did with the Crusaders featuring Randy Crawford. The new recording, however, features synthesizers, electric bass and electric guitar with background vocals.
Sample performs at 7 and 9 p.m. Thursday at Leeward Community College, 96-045 Ala Ike. Tickets are $25 general admission and $35 preferred seating.
At 7 p.m. Friday, Sample will give a concert at the Maui Arts & Culture Center, Kahului Beach Road. Tickets are $25.
Tickets for all the concerts are available at all Ticket Connection outlets. Call 625-4664 for information.
