China’s table tennis
team in exhibition here

A delegation of world-class table tennis players from the People's Republic of China will take part in an exhibition against top Hawaii players Saturday at the Mid-Pacific Institute Gym.

The Chinese team is concluding a friendship tour of the U.S. commemorating the 25th anniversary of the "ping pong diplomacy" that helped reestablish diplomatic relations between the U.S. and China. Among those stopping in Honolulu are six members of the original Chinese team that first competed in 1971-72.

The exhibition is scheduled for 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $5 in advance, $7 at the door. For more information, call the Hawaii Table Tennis Club at 848-2646.

RICHARD LEADS PRO-AM: At Kailua-Kona, Jean Paul Richard, fishing off the French Look II, is the leader in the Hawaiian International Billfish Pro-Am with 1,28 points. He landed a 452-pound marlin yesterday.

California's Challengers Billfish Team tops the ahi division with 399 points.

SATO PITCHES TWO-HITTER: At Euclid, Ohio, Grant Sato allowed just two hits as the Hawaii Islanders defeated Euclid, Ohio, 6-1, in championship bracket play at the Continental Amateur Baseball Association World Series for high school-age teams yesterday.

Gregg Omori was 3-for-4 and Keone DeRenne had two hits, including a triple, for Hawaii.

SALCUR DELIVERS KEY HIT: At Salem, Ore., Glenn Salcur's one-out, two-run single in the fourth inning scored the only runs for Hawaii in a 2-1 victory over Alaska, in the Little League Big League (16-18) Division I baseball tournament yesterday.

Hawaii plays Oregon in an elimination game today.

AIEA REACHES TITLE ROUND: Reily Maeda tossed a two-hitter and Chad Moriyama went 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles and two RBIs as Aiea rallied past West Valley of Yakima, Wash., 8-3, in the Little League Juniors (13 years old) Division I baseball tournament yesterday.

Aiea spotted West Valley three runs in the bottom of the third inning before scoring eight runs in the fourth through sixth innings to put the game away.

The Hawaii team plays West Boise, Idaho, today in the championship round.

HAWAII REMAINS UNBEATEN: At Medford, Ore., Kehau Yamaguchi limited Alaska to two singles and struck out six as Hawaii routed Alaska, 17-0, in a game shortened to five innings due to the 10-run rule at the Little League Girls Softball Seniors (13-15) Division I tournament yesterday.

Hawaii, the only undefeated team, draws a bye today and needs one win tomorrow (vs. the Oregon-Alaska winner) to advance.

EAST HONOLULU CHAMPS: East Honolulu beat Kauai, 11-6, to win the PONY Palomino State baseball tourney at Ala Wai Field Sunday.

Cyrus Oh Young, Lane Nogawa, Jared Kato and Landon Murakami each paired hits for East Honolulu, which went undefeated in the four-team, double-elimination event. East Honolulu advances to the Western Regional, Aug. 7-12, at Santa Clara, Calif.

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA LEADS: At Mauna Kea Resort, Southern California (216) took a seven-stroke lead over Nevada and San Diego in the first round of the Boys' Junior America's Cup golf tournament yesterday at the Mauna Kea Beach Course.
