Winning thoughts on peace

If the leaders of the world held an essay contest to help them with peacemaking policy, they might come away with some refreshing and bright ideas from high school students, like soon-to-be-senior Darrel Sin.

Sin authored the essay that won Hawaii's first place slot in the 10th annual National Peace Essay Contest.

"I wrote about peace settlements of World War I and World War II," said Sin. "I compared and contrasted what was effective and what was not."

In June, Sin went to Washington, D.C., representing Hawaii at a conference with other essay contest winners from around the country. "It was a good time," Sin said. He enjoyed maneuvering through a hypothetical Irish peace process, role-playing a member of the political faction Sinn Fein, as well as playing tourist. Sin said he likes our nation's capital, but, "Nothing compares to Hawaii's weather."

This practice in high-level decision making has not persuaded Sin to aspire to the world of politics. "I'll get to college, take some courses I like and see how it goes," he said. "I'll have to see what opportunities there are."

Clarissa and Francis Sin are open and hopeful about their son's future. "It's hard to say what he'll end up doing," said Clarissa Sin. "He'll probably try out some different things."

A study abroad program in Taiwan is one thing Sin has under his belt. "It was a good experience for me because it gave me independence," he said.
