Franco/Hawaiian affair

An international arts festival celebrating Hawaii's connection to countries around the world, "Crossings '97: France/Hawaii," this fall will feature the work of several contemporary French artists including Sophie Calle, Jacques Vieille and Sarkis.

The triennial event began in 1986 with an exchange between Hawaii and Japan.

The exchange with France started in 1989 when 44 artists from Hawaii presented their work in Paris and Cagnes-sur to commemorate the bicentennial anniversary of the French Revolution. The exchange continues with a series of exhibitions in Hawaii that focus on French culture and art.

Organized by the Honolulu Academy of Arts, The Contemporary Museum and the University of Hawaii Art Gallery, the festival will kick off Oct. 4 and run until Nov. 23. The opening ceremony will be held Oct. 5 at Honolulu Hale, 530 S. King St.,

But if the many exhibitions of Crossings '97 don't provide enough French exposure, several other French-themed events that coincide with the festival just might make Hawaii's palm trees start looking like miniature versions of the Eiffel Tower.

These events include the French Festival, a celebration of French luxury goods by French artisans and craftsmen, and concerts by the Honolulu Symphony featuring the music of French composers Hector Berlioz, Claude Debussy and Francis Poulenc.
