








Pyewacket sets elapsed time record
Pyewacket, a Santa Cruz 70 turbo sled designed by Bill Lee and sailed by Roy Pat Disney and crew, established a Transpacific Yacht Race elapsed time record of seven days, 15 hours, 24 minutes, 40 seconds yesterday with its early morning crossing of the Diamond Head finish line.Pyewacket was skippered by Disney and Robbie Haines. The navigator was Stan Honey. Other crew members included Rick Brent, Dan Crowley, Gregg Hedrick, Scott Easom, Dick Lowrey and Ben Mitchell.
Pyewacket will take home the Barn Door trophy, awarded annually to the boat with the best elapsed-time finish. None of the yachts still racing can beat Pyewacket's time.
OAHU ALL-STARS HOT: The Oahu Summer League All-Stars welcomed the Hawaii Island Movers back to Rainbow Stadium with a pair of one-run defeats.
The Stars won Saturday's game, 5-4, when Brandon Toro singled, stole second, took third on the catcher's throwing error and scored on Corey Ishigo's eighth-inning sacrifice fly.
Yesterday, former University of Hawaii pitcher and basketball player Chris Walz hurled a complete-game five-hitter as the Stars prevailed, 2-1.
Toro again ignited the winning rally in the eighth inning with a triple. He scored on a single by David Lovell.
Scott Martines had three hits for the Movers.
The teams play again tonight at 6 at Rainbow Stadium.
DEADLINE APPROACHING: Friday is the deadline for annual ticket renewals for the 1997 Jeep Eagle Aloha Bowl Football Classic, to be played Christmas Day at Aloha Stadium.
Anyone who has not received a personalized ticket renewal form in the mail should call ticket manager Kathy Hong at 947-4141.
SCHOLARSHIP AWARDED: Kakainahoe Puleloa, a recent graduate of Molokai High School, is the 1997 recipient of the Kapalua Land Company, Ltd., annual tennis scholarship.
Puleloa will be awarded $1,000 annually for four years pending annual review. She will attend the University of Portland (Ore.), where she plans to play tennis.
She was Molokai's valedictorian, tennis team captain, a Maui Interscholastic League all-star, student body president, on the math team and in LEO club (a service organization).
MARAUDERS BENEFIT SET: World League Wrestling is hosting the second annual Slam-O-Rama at the Waipahu High School gym Sunday with the first match starting at 7 p.m.
The event is a benefit for the Marauders athletic department.
Available at the door, ringside tickets cost $15; general admission is $10; for children under age 18 and senior citizens, $5.
SOCCER COACHES COURSE: The National Soccer Coaches Association of America is offering a Regional Diploma Course for youth and high school coaches, July 24-26, at Mid-Pacific Institute.
The cost is $35 for NSCAA members and $50 for others.

HANDBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS: Hawaii will enter a team in the Native American Sports Council Team Handball Junior National Championships at Black Hills State University, Spearfish, S.D., July 21-24.
The team members are Paul Taala, Noah Taala, Makaha'a Wolfgramm, Maui Wolfgramm, Langi Wolfgramm, Konrad Perriton, Carah Smith, Kupa'a Oleole, Major Salanoa, Marcus Salanoa and Kapono Kaluhiokalani.
The coaches are Emil Wolfgramm and Joseph Wilson.
STILL TIME TO SIGN UP: Registration is still open for the sixth annual Fore! Maryknoll Golf Tournament scheduled for Aug. 1 at the Pearl Country Club.
The entry fee is $330 per three-person team or $100 per player. Proceeds go to the Maryknoll Schools athletic department.
