When handicap time was computed, Inquisitor, sailed by John Black of Newport Beach, Calif., was third behind Richard Sherlock's Catalina 36 Surprise of Ventura, Calif.
Medicine Man, sailed by Bob Lane of Long Beach, Calif., had a 15-mile lead in the Division III standings among boats that started Wednesday. Persuasion, sailed by Jerry Montgomery of Long Beach, was second.
Women sailors were struggling in the race's early stages.
Bay Wolf, a 50-foot, all-woman entry from Long Beach, tore its main sail on the first night out.
Most boats carry no spare main sail, so as the boat slipped to fifth place, the crew was making repairs.

VICTORINO TO DEFEND CUP: Defending champion Damien Victorino will be joined by 63 other golfers as the Hawaii State Match Play Championship -- or the Manoa Cup -- begins with a qualifying round Monday at the Oahu Country Club.
Among those attempting to qualify will be Stan Souza, Larry Stubblefield and state high school champion Norman Asao.
Two rounds will be played Tuesday with the winners advancing to single rounds on Wednesday and Thursday. Both Friday's semifinal matchups and the final next Sunday will be 36 holes.
