Swimmer Aileen Soule
sets sixth world record

Aileen Riggin Soule took care of some unfinished business at the Pan Pacific Masters Swim Championships which concluded in Lahaina, Maui, on Sunday.

The 91-year-old Soule, America's oldest living Olympic gold medalist, set the world record in the 200-meter backstroke for the 90-94 age bracket at the new Lahaina Aquatic Center.

It was her sixth world record and the one she was disappointed at not getting a chance to establish last year.

Her time of 5:29.7, set June 24, was nearly twice as fast as the previous world record of 9:16.56, set in October 1996 by Australia's Del Rowley.

Soule, who became America's first female Olympic springboard diving champion in 1920 in Antwerp, Belgium.

Paddleboarder Jones
triumphs again

Dawson Jones won his third consecutive Independence Day Paddleboard Race Friday, covering the 3.5-mile course from Sunset Beach to Waimea Bay in 28 minutes, 32 seconds.

The Pupukea resident's time was just 13 seconds off last year's record clocking for boards over 12 feet and almost two minutes ahead of runner-up Garrett McNamara (30:22).

In the Paddleboard Division, Gavin Sutherland topped the men in 31:17. and Kelly Fey won the women's division in 36:10.
