Star-Bulletin grabs
14 journalism awards

The Honolulu Star-Bulletin's "Locked Out" series won top honors in the public service reporting category of the Society of Professional Journalists-Hawaii Excellence in Journalism Awards.

It was one of 14 awards captured by the Star-Bulletin in the inaugural year of the competition, which aims to improve the standards of journalism in Hawaii. Judges received 158 print entries and 50 television entries for the contest, which covered calendar year 1996.

In addition to the "Locked Out" series -- written by Ian Lind, Richard Borreca, Pat Omandam, Gordon Y.K. Pang and Jim Witty -- the Star-Bulletin took top honors in three other categories.

Rob Perez's "Real Estate Waivers" won in the government reporting category, George Steele took the award for headline writing, and David Shapiro's "Volcanic Ash" won in the column-writing category.

Business reporting: "Real Estate Waivers," Rob Perez; "Antenna Dilemma," Rob Perez and Richard Borreca.

General news reporting: "Betrayal of Trust," Christine Donnelly.

Investigative reporting: "Hawaiian Homelands: Problems and Promises," Joan Conrow and Rod Thompson.

Sports reporting: "Fishy Habit," Mike Fitzgerald.

Headline Writing: Dan Woods; Lois Lingeman.

Feature photo/newsprint: "Heart Breaking," Ken Sakamoto.

Illustration: "Hawaii Theatre," Kevin Hand.
